Open-pit mining, open-cut mining or opencast mining is a method of extracting rock or minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrow. The inclined section of the wall is known as the batter, and the flat part of the step is known as the bench or berm.
The mining method is bench berm Mine capacity in 19 mt ore day with a production unit cost of 6 29 mt ore The ore mined is composed of chromite spinel and chlorite with waste material consisting primarily of montmorillonite and chalcedony As of 1984 there were two known tabular shaped ore bodies one of which extends 1 830 . May 10, 2015· The catch bench (“CB”) or berm is used to catch spalling rock and prevent it from rolling down the pit wall, creating a safety hazard. A rule of thumb is that the catch bench width should be according to the formula 4.5m + 0.2H, where H is the height of the bench.

Bench: is a ledge which forms a single level of operation where ore and waste are excavated. Berm: is a horizontal shelf or ledge built in to a sloping wall of an open pit or quarry for protection under level.
Confusingly, miners often call berms “benches,” e.g. “the 120m bench, the 130m bench . . .” Some berms are slightly inclined along their length and connected to form a spiral roadway or ramp into a pit. Heavy vehicles working in pits can handle a maximum slope of about 6 degrees (1:10).
Berms 02: The Purpose of Berms Berms are common safety features seen on mine property. Berms are found along haul roads and at dump sites and are often taken for granted.
The bench face angle and berm width geometries must be chosen to fit the bench stack angle but must provide a berm that will be capable of catching the volume of failed wedge material from the bench faces above. Other considerations for bench height and berm
Where the bench cannot be safely cleaned, other measures shall be taken to protect miners. Other measures may include placing a berm at the base of the wall, bank, or slope to prevent the overtravel of material into the area where miners work or travel or ceasing mining in the affected area. 56/57.3200 Correction of Hazardous Conditions
determining safe and workable bench height, bench face angle, and bench width. To determine the relationship of mine design parameters/practices and effective ground control in surface mining, this study was undertaken. It included coal and nonmetal mines, and consisted of four parts: • A review of accident statistics for the 1988-1997 period

Open-pit mining is a surface mining method where rocks & minerals are removed from an open pit near the earth’s surface. Definition, description, & benefits. The incline section of the wall is called the ‘batter,’ and the flat part of the step is called the ‘bench’ or ‘berm.’
Figure 1 Bench controlled inter-ramp angle, inter-ramp angle, and overall slope angle CATCH BENCH DESIGN The catch bench consists of a bench face and a catch bench. A bench face is the vertical to intermediate dipping wall created in rock by excavation actions (Figure 2). This wall, or face, will also have the added component of a "bench".
