The top fits secure and the handle is plenty strong. I filled the feeder with about 5 pounds of feed and hung it by the ladle on feeder post. Birds took to it right away. My pet squirrel, Fred, has tried repeatedly to get in the feeder to no avail! Definitely would recommend this feeder if you're tired of filling feeders
