Alcan (now Rio Tinto) has had a long history in Jamaica, constructing two alumina refineries there in the 1950s. In 2001 Alcan sold its bauxite mining and alumina plants in Jamaica but kept responsibility for many of the bauxite residue sites with the intention of safely remediating them to an agreed standard and transferring ownership to the Government of Jamaica.
Because of Jamaica’s low-silica high-quality bauxite, it is well suited for global alumina and cement industries. Aluminum production starts with the strip mining of the raw material bauxite, which is a clay-like soil found near the equator.

This was the beginning of the industry in Jamaica. After the first shipment of bauxite from Jamaica in 1952, production increased rapidly, and by 1957 Jamaica had become the leading bauxite producer in the world, with a production capacity of nearly 5 million tonnes of bauxite per year, almost a quarter of all the bauxite mined in the world in that year.
The Jamaica Bauxite Institute (JBI) is a recognized repository of information on bauxite and alumina, and enjoys a solid reputation for research and analysis of data and trends in the industry. The existence of the JBI puts Jamaica in the position of being one of the few developing countries with an institution devoted solely to the research and development of one of its prime mineral resources.

The Mining Act which was enacted in 1947 is an extremely powerful law that gives the Government of Jamaica (in the form of “the Crown”) sole ownership of Jamaica’s minerals including bauxite, thereby disenfranchising property owners as they cannot stop mining from taking place on their land.
