Bauxite is the ore from which aluminium is made. Jamaica contains some of the largest known deposits of bauxite in the world. The mining areas are located in the western and central parts of the island. After mining, most of the bauxite is carried to alumina plants where it is refined into alumina.
Noranda Bauxite, partnered with the Government of Jamaica and New Day Aluminum, is located on the North Coast of Jamaica. Here, we dry and ship more than 5 million dry metric tons of bauxite per year, and we have been for over 60 years. Because of Jamaica’s low-silica high-quality bauxite, it is well suited for global alumina and cement industries.
At one of the disposal sites in Jamaica, the bauxite residue had been deposited in depressions left after bauxite mining. When deposited, the residue had a solids content of approximately 20% but it was discharged in a way that in most cases, when full and aged, no residual pond water remained resulting in a relatively dry surface with a pH of about 11.

Jun 05, 2012· On June 5, 1952, the first shipment was made by Reynolds Jamaica Mines from its port in Ocho Rios to the parent company's alumina plant at Hurricane Creek, Arkansas. The Daily Gleaner 'jumped the gun', so to speak, by announcing the impending shipment in the next day or two in its issue of May 28, 1952, with a front page headline: 'Red Gold Going for the First Time'.
In second place was China at 70 million tonnes followed by Guinea (50 million tonnes), Brazil (27 million tonnes) and India (24 million tonnes). Jamaica had by then fallen to sixth place in the world, producing 10 million tonnes of bauxite.
In 1952, the first shipment of bauxite was exported from Jamaica, and the first batch of alumina was processed in Jamaica. By the 1960s, Jamaica had become the largest producer of bauxite in the world. Smelting requires 13,500 kWh of electricity per ton of aluminum, more energy than any other metal.
The Jamaica Bauxite Mining Company (JBM) was set up to hold the assets acquired from entering into partnerships or joint ventures with the companies, and the Bauxite and Alumina Trading Company (BATCO) was established to carry out commercial (trading) activities on behalf of JBM.
Jun 07, 2019· But we want Jamaicans to be able to live in western Jamaica for the next 200, 500, 1,000 years. If we destroy the water-harvesting ability of the Cockpit Country in the process of extracting a few hundred tons of bauxite, this could reduce the quality of life in western Jamaica forever. Is it worth it?

Alcan built a second refinery in Jamaica at Ewarton, St. Catherine, in 1959. In 1961, a fourth company, Alcoa, began mining bauxite in the island. The production of alumina also increased, especially after the mid-1960s. By 1968, Alcan had brought the capacity of its two refineries to more than 1
Despite numerous assurances from the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) that bauxite mining would not be permitted in Cockpit Country, reports from community members and site visits by a member of the Cockpit Country Stakeholders Group (CCSG) have confirmed that Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partnership (NJBP) has begun these mining operations.
