White Pine Mine was a major copper producer in the U.P. from the 1950s to the 1990s, making it one of the last of its kind. Now, all there is to see is a mothballed smelter, a ruined mill, and a ghost town.
Underground mining continued sporadically until 1922, when the last of the pumps was shut off causing the mines to flood. Re-processing of mill tailings continued through the 1920s, and exploration in the area continued through the 1950s, with some renewed interest today.
The Belmont Mill was built in 1925 by the Tonopah Belmont Development Mining Company to process ore from the- surprise!- Belmont Mine, on the side of a mountain 1.8 miles away.
