Description. The manganese ore deposits at Groote Eylandt are quite variable both in regard to grade and physical cond- ition. In order to treat a wider range of these ores and to increase production a new primary-crusher and’ concentrator complex costing $8 million has been installed and commissioned to treat ore at the rate of 12,000 tonnes per
The Groote Eylandt manganese ore deposits contain mainly pyrolusite and cryptomelane with lesser amounts of the manganese minerals lithiophorite, todorokite, psilomelane, and nsutite. The major non-manganese minerals which occur are quartz, kaolinite, and goethite. Determination of the mineralogy relies mainly on x-ray diffraction analysis.
Groote Eylandt Mining Company (GEMCO) is a manganese mining operation located in the Northern Territory, Australia. South32 Limited owns 60 per cent of GEMCO and Anglo American Plc holds the remaining 40 per cent. GEMCO is currently one of the largest and lowest-cost manganese ore producers in

Oct 01, 1990· The sedimentary manganese ore deposit of Groote Eylandt, Australia, is an example of the Orthoquartzite-Glauconite- Clay Association, and was formed during a short Cenomanian Age transgression and regression across the Middle Proter- ozoic sandstone basement of the island.
The mine is operated by the Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty Ltd (GEMCO), which is majority owned by South 32 Ltd. The ore is mined by shallow open-cut mining methods and is transported by road to a nearby port. Production in 2018/19 totalled 5.58 Mt of manganese ore.
Its attributes include high-grade ore, open-cut mining operations, its own port facilities located at Milner Bay only 16km from mining operations, and its close proximity to Asian export markets. GEMCO, whose FY2014 production of manganese ore was 4,776 kt (100 per cent basis), has a reserve life of 11 years.

Oct 01, 1990· The Groote Eylandt ore deposit contains manganese-oxide-replaced algal stromatolites, coccoid microfossils, and microalgae (Os- twald, 1981 ). Ostwald ( 1981 ) suggested that the ores had a biogeochemical origin on the ba- sis of: (1) Widespread present-day occurrence of both marine and flesh water microorganisms capable of precipitating oxides
The Groote Eylandt manganese deposit is located on the island of Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Territory, Australia, some 50 km from the coast of Arnhem Land and 650 km ESE of Darwin. Groote Eylandt lies on the eastern margin of the Proterozoic McArthur Basin. The ore deposit is developed within flat lying Cretaceous rocks deposited unconformably on a basement of

Mesa’s Ant Hill mining lease contains a large resource of medium grade, high iron manganese that prior to 1968 yielded approximately 500,000 tonnes of manganese metalurgical grade lump ore at an average Mn content of 48.3%. (Mining activities at Ant Hill ceased with the opening of BHP’s Groote Eylandt manganese mine.)
(i) Smelting of manganese ore was established in Tasmania in 1962 with a 16,000 I0/A furnace based on an abundance of hydro electric power and using imported South African ore to produce an alloy grade of 70% Mn. (ii) In 1966 a major ore body was developed at Groote Eylandt, the GEMCO operation.
